Deaf & Interpreting Services | St. Clair College

Deaf and Interpreting Services at St. Clair College is dedicated to providing Deaf and Hard of Hearing students an optimal learning environment. For us to provide quality services, a report or diagnosis must be obtained by the student from a medical professional who is registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Once documents are submitted to Disability Services, the student will book an appointment with a Counsellor to develop an appropriate Accommodation Plan.

What We Do

  • Emphasize the concept of teamwork in providing accommodations
  • Arrange for and provide interpreting services
  • Support communication needs in class settings and academic-related activities on campus
  • Provide interpreters for tutorial sessions
  • Network with professors, departments, and college facilities
  • Network with other college services such as Counselling, The Registrar's Office, Scheduling, Physical Plant, Student Representative Council, etc.
  • Promote college-wide communication access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing

Request for Interpreting Service

Following the appointment with the Counsellor, students meet with the ASL/English Interpreter Officer to discuss and create an interpreting service plan. Every effort is made to provide students with a qualified interpreter. This is done on a first come first served basis so it is highly advised that students apply early to ensure interpreter availability. While it is not possible to guarantee any specific interpreter, students are encouraged to let the ASL/English Interpreter Officer know of any preferences they have. Once services are confirmed, assigned interpreters will remain as consistent as possible. In the event that service is interrupted due to illness or emergencies, every attempt will be made to find a comparable substitute.

Requests for Additional/Extra-Curricular Interpreting Services

Requests for services outside the classroom should be made to the ASL/English Interpreter Officer as early as possible. An available interpreter will be assigned to the activity in the following priority: (1) additional program hours, (2) class required activities and student/professor meetings, (3) other college services such as counselling, financial aid, extra-curricular events (college sponsored), etc. Please email DIS@stclaircollege.ca or stop by the DIS office, room #A2110A, to make a request or send an email to the ASL/English Interpreter Officer addressing the required information.
