Program Overview

Hairstylists are capable of advanced cutting techniques on both male and female clients, hair textured services (perming and chemical hair relaxing) hair colouring, colour correction, foiling techniques including current colour trends. In addition, stylists create “updo” styling for bridal and prom work, braiding and extension installation and maintenance.

Program Highlights

  • Clinical and lab experience.
  • Students can earn credits towards apprenticeship.
  • Industry specific field trips and involvement in community charity events.
  • Students who have successfully completed their 1500 hours of in-school training will receive a diploma and apply those hours towards the Ministry required 3,500 total hours which includes 2000 hours of on the job training as a Registered Apprentice prior to challenging the Certificate of Qualification exam.

Career Opportunities

A typical entry-level position involves being an assistant to a stylist with the opportunity to build a clientele and begin working independently as a junior stylist within a salon. There is excellent potential for advancement with self-employment as an option, salon manager, trainer, industry sales representative, educator or platform artist.

Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of courses at the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) or Open (O) level qualify for admission to this program.

For programs with Experiential Learning (Work Placement/Internship): Costs for accommodation, if needed, travel and related expenses is at the student's own expense. It is recommended for most programs, that students have access to a laptop or desktop computer while away from home during experiential learning periods.

Textbooks and other materials are in addition to Tuition Fees. Textbook prices may be found through the Bookstore website.

  7. Cut Hair - The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to identify, select and use a variety of tools to cut hair according to the needs and expectations of the client.
  8. Style Hair - The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to select and use standard and specialized techniques to effectively style wet and dry hair.
  9. Permanent Wave - The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to perform a permanent wave using current and relevant methods according to hair type and style.
  10. Chemically Relax Hair - The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to chemically relax hair by selecting and applying relevant knowledge of, and skills with, chemical products and techniques in order to meet the needs and expectation of the client.
  11. Colour and Lighten Hair - The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to colour, lighten, tone, highlight and lowlight hair, and/or remove pigment to the level of colour desired.
  12. Hair Additions - The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to compare and contrast fibre types, application procedures, specialized tools, and maintenance procedures when working with hair additions.
