The broad survey of Indigenous languages provides a unique insight and understanding into the richly diversified cultures, histories and societies of Indigenous North America. This course will in part utilize linguistics and other social science methods in the examination of Indigenous languages. In contemporary times, Indigenous languages play an important role in the development of North American culture and communications, examples; place names and daily usage. Presently, Indigenous people have placed a high priority on the recovery and survival of Native languages. Through the use of the expertise of Indigenous language speakers; survey mapping projects; and applied student language projects, the student will gain a solid knowledge base, greater insight and appreciation of Indigenous languages.
