This course is designed to provide basic machining theory in the classroom, reinforced with self-study and homework materials. In addition, practical experience in a machine shop setting will be provided for technology students. Theory topics such as:, safety, precision measurement, layout and bench work, operations of equipment, cutting tool geometry, speeds and feeds, cutting fluids and coolants will be delivered at a basic level. Practical training and hands-on applications shall be in the area of bench work, as well as, machine tool operations of the following equipment: lathes, milling machines, drill presses, power saws, grinding machines and other related equipment. Emphasis will be placed on the participant gaining an insight and understanding of the safe and proper use of hand tools and machine tools in a meal-cutting environment. The course will also include instruction on programming, set-up and operation of a vertical C.N.C. machining centre.
