This course will introduce the student to the various theories of criminology and explanations of deviant behaviour as well as prevention and intervention strategies. Influences of the family, society, peers and others will be examined in terms of their impact on youth delinquency. Applying a historical comparative perspective, the student will study the development of youth justice philosophy and practice over the past century. Legislation pertaining to youth crime will be examined in depth including the Juvenile Delinquents Act, the Young Offenders Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The social face of youth crime will be examined in depth to determine trends across various populations of youth.
