This is an introductory course designed to introduce students to basic concepts related to bonding in inorganic chemistry. Topics include an introduction to the basic concepts of atoms and quantum theory, the basic concepts of bonding in molecules including Lewis Structures, Valence Bond Theory, Molecular Orbital Theory and the Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) model, basic concepts of the structures and energetics of metallic and ionic solids, basic concepts of molecular symmetry, including symmetry operations, point groups, character tables, predicting the number of peaks expected in the spectra obtained by various techniques such as Infrared (IR), Raman and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), predicting the shape of simple molecules, and basic concepts related to bonding in polyatomic molecules including hybridization and molecular orbitals.
