Congratulations to Sofiia Deretska, the winning designer of this year's SRC Day Planner 2024-2025!
For over 20 years, Graphic Design students have been tasked with creating the cover for the annual student day planner, produced by the Student Publications Division of the Student Representative Council (SRC).
Originally, this project was part of the curriculum for senior-year graphic design students. However, a few years ago, faculty members decided to make it an exciting challenge for first-year students instead.
Each winter semester, students submit their designs, and faculty members select the ten most interesting and creative ones to present to the SRC. These top ten designs are then displayed in the SRC office for about a week, where everyone passing through is invited to vote for their top three favourites. At the end of the exhibit, the planner's editor tallies the votes, considering both the number of votes and their rankings (first, second, or third favourite).
This year, Sofiia's design stood out, being named a top-three favourite by nearly everyone who voted and receiving the most first-place votes. As a result, she was awarded a cash prize from the SRC and a credit blurb on the first page of the publication.
The SRC printed 14,000 copies of this year's planner, which will be distributed across all campuses. First-year students typically receive their planners as part of a "swag" package during orientation, while returning students can pick theirs up from newsstands and shelving racks throughout the campus.
Sofiia's achievement not only highlights her exceptional talent but also serves as an inspiration to her peers. Her journey from a first-year student to a celebrated designer is a testament to the creativity and dedication fostered within the Graphic Design program. As students and faculty alike admire her work throughout the year, Sofiia's design will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the campus community.
