St. Clair College Women’s Basketball Rout Mohawk in Hamilton
(Hamilton, Ontario) - The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team continued their chase of a home court playoff game with an 88-57 rout of Mohawk College in Hamilton Saturday evening. The Lady Saints are now 9-7 and just a few wins out of 4th place in the OCAA’s West Division.
St. Clair jumped ahead 25-16 over Mohawk after the opening quarter and held a commanding 48-28 halftime lead. After another lopsided third quarter (27-12) the Saints were able to distribute playing time to the reserves down the stretch and eased to the victory. St. Clair used an effective full court defense that resulted in many easy baskets in transition while outrebounding Mohawk 38-26.
Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) led four Saints in double figures with a game high 20 points but 10 rebounds allowed her to record a double-double. Saints point guard Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) scored 17 points including 4 triples with Noor Bazzi (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) adding 15 points and 7 rebounds. Logan Kucera chipped in with 12 points for St. Clair.
Sam Pocrnic (Oakville, ON) scored 18 points for Mohawk in a losing effort.
St. Clair College Men’s Basketball Shoot Lights Out in Hamilton
(Hamilton, Ontario) - The St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team tied a school record for points in a single game humbling Mohawk College in Hamilton Saturday night by a score of 120-89. It was a pivotal game for playoff seeding in the OCAA’s West Division that saw St. Clair move their record to 6-10 and into 7th place just ahead of Mohawk.
Right from the start St. Clair asserted themselves with a 30-15 lead after the opening frame. The Saints continued their assault in the second quarter on their way to a 66-42 advantage by the halftime intermission. St. Clair maintained their momentum in the second half and increased their lead down the stretch. The Saints shot greater than 56% from the field in the game and nearly as well from distance at 53% while making 16 triples overall. Although undersized the Saints won the war on the glass by a 42-33 count in rebounds.
David Gomez Jr. (Pontiac, MI) scored 28 points to go with 5 rebounds and 5 assists to top St. Clair. Saints 2nd year forward Glynn Willis-Paris (Windsor, ON/Kennedy Collegiate) had his best collegiate game making a red-hot 6 triples on his way to 24 points while adding 6 rebounds. St. Clair’s Jalen Sykes (Redford, MI) made 4 triples of his own and finished with 23 points and cleared 7 rebounds. TJ Howard (Hamilton, ON) came off the bench to round out the double figure scorers for the Saints with 11 points in front of his hometown fans.
Mohawk’s Emanuel Otong (Cambridge, ON) scored a game high 29 points in a losing cause.
St. Clair Women's Volleyball Split on the Road
The St. Clair women’s volleyball team was on the road this weekend to take on Mohawk College and Niagara College.
On Friday night, St. Clair fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers by a score of 3-2 in an intense exciting back and forth match. Set scores for Mohawk were 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25 and 23-21. Middle Kiana Gelissen (LaSalle; Sandwich Secondary) had a great match with 7 kills, 2 service aces and 6 stuff blocks. Te-Anna Stephenson (Whitby; Sinclair Secondary) also had a big game with 15 kills, 3 service aces and 1 stuff block. With the win Mohawk improved to 12-4 on the season. The Mountaineers are ranked 5th in Ontario.
On Saturday, the Saints were in Welland to take on the Niagara Knights. In another tight five set match St. Clair came out on top 3-2. Set scores for the Saints were 15-25, 25-16, 25-22, 21-25 and 15-11. Stephenson led the way offensively for St. Clair with 18 kills, 2 service aces, and 11 digs. Setter Kim Quintanilla (Windsor; St. Joseph’s) had a solid game spreading the ball out well with 29 assists and 16 digs. Libero Julia Ann Milling (Woodstock; Woodstock Collegiate) also had a big match with 19 digs and 3 assists. The loss dropped Niagara’s record to 9-7 on the year. The Knights are currently ranked 6th in Ontario.
With the split the Saints record is now 13-3 on the season St. Clair is ranked 2nd in Ontario and 10th in Canada.
St. Clair College Women’s Basketball Win in Kitchener
(Kitchener, Ontario) - The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team made it three wins in a row with a dominant 87-53 victory over Conestoga College in Kitchener Sunday afternoon and ran their record to 10-7 in the OCAA’s West Division.
St. Clair held a comfortable 26-15 lead over Conestoga after the first quarter and parlayed that into a 47-31 halftime advantage. Conestoga never really mounted a comeback in the second half as the Saints held them to just 8 points in the final quarter. St. Clair forced Conestoga into 28 turnovers scoring 29 points on the exchange while holding the home team to just 31% shooting on the day.
Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) and Noor Bazzi (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) each topped the Saints in scoring with 16 points apiece. Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) scored 14 points but filled the stat sheet with 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and a blocked shot from the point guard position for the Saints. Keirsten Tomkins (Sarnia, ON) netted 13 points to go with 5 rebounds but the best St. Clair performance was turned in by Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) who scored a pedestrian 11 points but added 10 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocked shots. All five Saints starters reached double figures in the game showing some balanced scoring in the contest.
Conestoga’s Jamila Beckford (Waterloo, ON) scored 25 points to go with 14 rebounds in the loss.
St. Clair College Men’s Basketball End Road Trip with Win at Conestoga
(Kitchener, Ontario) – The St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team capped a strong showing on the road this weekend with a convincing 95-81 win over Conestoga College in Kitchener Sunday afternoon. The Saints now own a 7-10 record in the OCAA’s West Division and a modest 3-game win streak.
St. Clair held a slim 21-19 lead over Conestoga after the first quarter but increased the gap to 48-39 by halftime. The Saints went on a scoring binge in the third quarter however and were able to grow their advantage to 26 points midway through the period. From that point St. Clair was able to relax down the stretch for the win getting all 14 players dressed into the game. St. Clair was able to outscore Conestoga 19-3 in points off the bench and made 13 triples while shooting nearly 45% from distance.
St. Clair’s Jalen Sykes (Redford, MI) scored a game high 23 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 assists while point guard David Gomez Jr. (Pontiac, MI) scored 19 points adding 5 assists. Glynn Willis-Paris (Windsor, ON/Kennedy Collegiate) had another fine performance with 19 points along with 7 rebounds to go with 3 blocked shots. Ali Mansour (Windsor, ON/Kennedy Collegiate) chipped in with 11 points for the Saints off the bench.
