Students will be taught the theory of design, installation and operation of various underground conductors, transformers and streetlights. Students will learn about operating maps and nomenclature for underground systems. They will apply the work protection code through various classroom exercises. They will learn how to select fibre and rubber cover-up for various voltages as well as the proper care and use of this equipment. Students will learn the theory of splicing and terminating a variety of underground conductors. The course will discuss the design and installation of secondary open wire buss and triplex conductors. The design, installation, operation and maintenance of streetlights in both overhead and underground systems will be discussed. Students will learn how to select the appropriate size and voltage of three phase transformers and learn installation methods for pole mounted and underground systems. Single phase meter installation, removal and meter reading will be discussed.
