The purpose of this course is to introduce students to microorganisms and causative agents of infectious disease, particularly bacteria and viruses, starting with general characteristics of morphology, growth and virulence mechanisms, then dealing with modes of transmission and relationship to disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms, especially those relevant to students of dental hygiene. Epidemiology, disinfection and control of microbes, and human defense mechanisms including vaccines are discussed along with the inclusion of an introductory unit on the relationships and characteristics of oral microbes.
