In this course students will be introduced to the necessary foundations to understand microorganisms, their classification, transmission, and virulence, and the approaches necessary to destroy those that are pathogenic. This will provide the students with the rationale for applying the principles of sterilization and infection control. Emphasis is on those microorganisms associated with diseases of dental importance. The students will be introduced to the two most important infectious dental diseases (dental caries and periodontal diseases). They will investigate these diseases along with the evidence-based measures effective in improving oral health and preventing oral diseases.
