Swim to Survive school program is a Lifesaving Society survival training program for Grade 3 students. The goal is to have every Grade 3 student in Ontario achieve the Swim to Survive standard. There are 3 parts: 3 in-water lessons (1 hour each), 3 classroom water safety lessons and a handout for parents of participating children. Sponsored by St. Clair College free of charge. Please contact Jeff McEwan (jmcewan@stclaircollege.ca) to register your Grade 3 class.
What is the Swim to Survive standard?
Swim to Survive defines the minimum swim skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. Because most drownings occur close to safety, and most victims had no intention of going into the water, Swim to Survive focuses on three basic survival skills:
- ROLL into deep water
- TREAD water for one minute
- SWIM 50 metres
Swim to Survive +
This Lifesaving Society survival training program is for Grade 7 students. It builds on the Swim to Survive skills learned it Grade 3 to be able to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. Three 1 Hour pool sessions are booked per group, sponsored by St. Clair College free of charge.
Please contact Jeff McEwan (jmcewan@stclaircollege.ca) to register your Grade 7 class.
What is the Swim to Survive + Standard?
The Swim to Survive+ program is geared toward presenting real-life situations for children in Grade 7. The + (plus) means participants learn:
- ROLL into deep water
- TREAD water for 1 minute
- SWIM 50 Meters
- Lifesaving Skills to help a friend in deep water without putting themselves in danger (TALK, REACH, THROW)
- Basic physical fitness concepts through interval training and a fitness swim.
All skills are performed with clothes on to create a realistic situation of an “unexpected fall into the water”.
Come out to watch your children learn to swim!
