The Saints Rocket League team defied expectations on-route to a 2nd place finish in the UniRocketeers Collegiate World Championships this past weekend.
Entering the tournament as the 8th seed, the Saints battled through the 16-team bracket consisting of teams representing every continent and 10 countries.
The Saints went 3-1 in the Group Stage of the event, defeating Brewton-Parker College, of the United States, University of Lincoln, of the United Kingdom, and University of New South Wales, of Australia. The lone loss came to the Technical University of Berlin, which locked the Saints into the 4th seed heading into Championship Sunday.
In the quarterfinals, the Saints took down Ireland’s South East Technological University with a 4-1 score to advance to the semifinals. There they dispatched Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz University in a dominant 4-0 victory to secure their place in the Grand Finals.
In a back and forth match against Italy’s University of Genoa, heralded as #1 ranked collegiate team in the world, the Saints were defeated by a final score of 4-2.
It was the third-straight year St. Clair College qualified for the Collegiate Rocket League World Championships, marking only 1 of 2 teams to do so alongside TU Berlin.
