This course provides an introduction to the theory, purpose, principles, practices and resources used in the planning and development of activity and therapeutic recreation programs used in gerontological agencies and institutions. The course focuses on developing the skills to assess, plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate programming and activities designed to promote autonomy and meet the physical, intellectual and social needs of seniors living in institutional settings. Knowledge of group work modalities and group leadership/ facilitation roles will be addressed. Information regarding restorative care, health concerns, disorders or other special considerations common to the elderly living in long term care settings will be emphasized as considerations in the planning and implementation of activities. Knowledge, awareness, respect and sensitivity to all aspects of diversity relevant to seniors in long term care settings will be highlighted. Identification and introduction to the additional roles and duties incumbent to activation social service workers will be explored.
