This seminar provides an introduction to the origins, expectations, roles and demands of the social service worker field. Students learn the principles, values, ethics and sensitivities that guide the social service worker profession. Self awareness and self reflection are utilized as critical learning tools. Vocational standards, practice standards, scope of practice definitions and expectations specific to the social service worker role are introduced. Emphasis is also placed on the gerontology component of the role including competencies recommended for gerontological work., Relevant legislation and the structure of the healthcare, and social service systems for seniors in Ontario are examined. The range of health and social agencies/programs providing services to seniors are explored. Institutional and community placement settings and the subsequent roles for social service worker gerontology practitioners in each setting are explored and compared with the goal of assisting students in the selection of an appropriate field placement. The purpose of field placement in education and general field placement expectations are introduced.
