This course is designed to provide students with an extensive overview of many of the contemporary issues/controversies in Canadian society., , Students will be expected to take an active role in the learning process. Assignments, readings, labs, and group work will supplement classroom lectures. The nuturing and advancement of critical thinking skills as they apply to the many issues contained in this syllabus is an integral component of this course., The course will be taught from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Each issue will be addressed accounting for historical, political, economical and social dimensions., Another major theme that will be emphasized throughout the course will be that of social justice. Students will learn to identify the likely benefactors of proposed legislative changes and conversely be able to see the potential negative impact that such changes will have on other segments of society. Through the application of their developing critical thinking skills, students will be able to determine the social and political forces behind the perpetuation of ongoing issues in Canadian society.
