This course will introduce the student to the field of diagnostic medical sonography with an overview of professional responsibilities, conduct and judgment while adhering to relevant legislation and standards of practice. The student will become familiarized with sonographic equipment, instrumentation and basic procedures and have the opportunity to practice basic sonographic scanning techniques. The Sonography Canada National Competency Profiles and entry to practice competencies required of the Generalist Sonographer will also be reviewed. In addition, the student will become familiarized with the elements of medical terminology. Course work includes examining medical words through knowledge of roots, prefixes and suffixes, word building, abbreviations and symbols in relation to human anatomy and physiology. Students are introduced to reading and interpretation of medical orders and reports with an emphasis on terminology specific to the student's field of study
