This course introduces students to the current state of heating and cooling technology, theory, and safety. Study includes the principles of thermodynamics, energy, and matter and how those concepts apply to refrigeration. Specific topics include air conditioning principles and terms, fuels and other sources of heat, basic furnace and air distribution design and operation, system controls, and use of psychrometers, thermometers, hygrometers, and the reading and interpretation of psychometric charts. Descriptions of HVAC tools, and maintenance and operations for residential and commercial heating and cooling systems are also covered, emphasizing energy conservation and efficiency options for new and existing equipment.
