A study of principles of fluid mechanics and their application to devices and systems relevant to the power engineering field through integration of theoretical concepts with problem solving methods. Topics include forces in objects immersed in fluid, forces exerted by a moving fluid on a stationary or moving object, design of a simple industrial ventilation system, types of pipe and duct design and sizing methods, analysis of fluid flow in piping and duct systems including major and minor losses. Types of fluid flow and pressure measuring devices including their principle of operation and applications will be considered. Pump and fan types, their design, characteristics and selection, efficiency and power requirements, as well as system operating curves will be covered.
