This course is an introduction to plastics, the history of plastics and the processes used for forming and fabricating plastic parts. Various applications of plastics and the selection of plastics for particular applications, types, characteristics, properties and costs of different plastics will be discussed. Basic chemistry will be reviewed together with the concepts of colouring, finishing, use of fillers and recycling. Various methods of forming or moulding plastics, methods of fabrication such as machining welding and adhesion, the future of plastics, and plastics as a non-renewable resource are also discussed.
