This course is designed to provide the learner with an overview of the history of plastics, and the processes used for forming and fabricating plastic parts. Topics include various applications of plastics and the selection of plastics for particular application; and types, characteristics, properties and cost of different plastics. Basic chemistry is reviewed together with the concepts of colouring, finishing, and the use of fillers and recycling. In the lab, the learner will be required to set up and run various molding equipment and test selected plastics in the quality contol lab.
