This course is designed to introduce the student to the basics of metallurgy. Some of the topics include: structure of metals characterization and formation of alloys hardness failure and deformation of metals. Extraction Phase Equilibria and Phase Diagrams of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys are discussed. Different aspects of heat treatments are explained in detail. These topics are explored through classroom lectures discussions and lab experiments. Lab experiments and tests are marked towards the final grade. The student is also required to write technical reports of the experiments.
