This course will help the student understand the everyday experiences of a person with a label in contemporary society. Through reading, discussion and simulation, the student will be aware of the impact of labels and will create a vision of a non-labelling world. Human service roles which support the person-centred approach will be examined. Contemporary principles including empowerment, inclusion and interdependence will be central in a review of existing patterns and practices. Historical perspectives will be used to explain the evolution of our current system. As a result of these experiences the student will begin to anticipate the nature of his/her career.
