An important aspect of the trade is understanding the steps necessary to prevent the spread of disease and promote public health. Topics include cleaning and maintaining equipment, the effects of sanitation, physical and chemical agents, disinfectants and the most common contagious diseases. The safety precautions and measures required by the local health department for the protection of oneself as well as the health of the public will be included in this module and will be used throughout the program. Draping, shampooing and rinsing are introduced giving the patron the first impression of the stylist's ability. Anatomy of the body is discussed as well as the application of electricity and light therapy.
