Students learn the fundamental components of leading a basic group fitness class. This course provides students with the foundation to design and conduct a basic group fitness class with a variety of group exercise formats using common training principles, correct techniques, and safety. Students present one component of a fitness class that might include muscle balance, strength and flexibility, range of motion, progressive training, and class evaluation. Emphasis is placed on the importance of music, fundamental choreography, and cuing methods. A thorough overview of the primary components of group exercise, including principles, recommendations, and guidelines of warming up and stretching, cardio/respiratory training, muscular conditioning and flexibility, are explored. The many ways to exercise in a group are presented and practiced including high/low, step, stationary indoor cycling, kickboxing, interval training, Pilates, yoga, muscular conditioning and flexibility classes.
