An advanced course in applied thermodynamics for the mechanical engineering technology and energy systems design student, this course is intended to develop a thorough understanding of refrigeration cycles, system and applied machinery, and the application of psychrometrics to air conditioning processes. Topics include, properties of refrigerants, use of valves, gauges and controls, refrigerant pipe sizing, dry and wet bulb temperatures, relative & specific humidity, dew point temperature, enthalpy, sensible heat ratio, the use of the psychrometric chart in design and analysis, ASHRAE comfort zones, efficiency and air quality standards and guidelines. Also included is the study of hydronic and steam heating systems and applications, energy conversion through cogeneration and heat energy reclaiming techniques for improved efficiency.
