In this course, the concepts of oral health promotion and disease prevention for the individual client are introduced. Health and wellness, and their relationship to the determinants of health are discussed, as is the concept of oral risk assessment and specific interventions for the three levels of prevention. Theories of both teaching and learning, and theories of behavioural change are examined. The methods and materials for instructional design and planning are presented, with an emphasis on goal and objective writing and lesson plan development. Lesson plans for specific types of clients are created by students and presented to the class. Students role play counseling and communication techniques. Specific counseling techniques for tobacco cessation are studied. Students make presentations on the application of behavioural theories to tobacco cessation.
