The microbiology portion of the course provides the student with an overview of microbiological classification, ecology, transmission, and control will be presented as well as an introduction to host factors affecting health and disease. This will provide the rationale for the student to apply principles of sterilization and infection control in preclinical and clinical experiences. The oral microbiology of dental plaque and its function in the development of caries and periodontal disease will be studied. The oral pathology portion of the course provides the student with an overview in clinical characteristics, etiology, treatment and clinical significance of oral diseases and lesions that commonly affect the oral tissues.
