The course will focus upon how offenders serving community sentences are handled within the criminal justice system in Canada. There will be an emphasis on the various defining legislation with respect to community based sentences in Ontario including, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the Provincial Offences Act and the Criminal Code. Students will be introduced to various effective community supervision programs and practices that are critical to the rehabilitation of youth and adult offenders. Consideration will be given to diverse populations including women, visible minorities and aboriginal groups. Students will become familiar with the services and supports that various agencies offer and how they may benefit their clients. Students will also understand that these services are shaped by philosophical, social policy, economic factors, political influences or ideologies.
