This is an introductory level course in analytical chemistry that combines classroom lessons with practical, hands-on investigations in the laboratory. In the classroom, students will learn theoretical methodology; the focus of this course will be on statistics used in analytical chemistry and classical techniques, including titrations, gravimetric methods, and an introduction to methods involving electrochemistry. In the laboratory, the student will apply the theoretical methodology to investigate important analytical targets, using standardized techniques prescribed by regulatory agencies, such as Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in particular, methods from The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).Emphasis will be placed on the demonstration of analytical and critical thinking through knowledgeable and effective communication.
