Your academic success constitutes the bright light at the end of the tunnel as our community – our entire globe – emerges from a pandemic which has challenged our physical, emotional, social and economic well-being.
Rebuilding many facets of our world will require your knowledge, your ingenuity and your hands-on skills. In every era, a St. Clair College credential has attested to the possession of those capabilities.
But the recipients of our diplomas during 2020 and 2021 – including you and your classmates – bring other rare and remarkable traits to bear upon your post-Convocation lives and careers. The adaptability, resilience and persistence which you demonstrated in the pursuit of your education in the midst of crisis are qualities that will be direly needed as we set out to restore our community and our world to stability and productivity.
It’s a common, and perhaps the most self-revealing, question in the job interview that many of you will be involved in as you pursue your professional careers … an HR recruiter will sit across a desk from you, and ask: “Tell me about a challenge that you faced in your life and how you overcame it.” You, Dear Graduates of 2021, have the best answer imaginable to this question: “I was in the midst of my postsecondary education when a global pandemic completely changed the entire method of academic delivery. But I decided that was not going to stop me. I adapted, I boosted my self-discipline to meet the demanding new format, I persevered and I succeeded. Here I am, with the same never-quit attitude, ready to tackle whatever task you put before me.”
During Convocations, the officials on stage are supposed to deliver speeches to inspire the audience of graduates. But the reverse has been the case at St. Clair throughout 2020 and 2021 … it is you, the graduates, who have immensely impressed and inspired the Board of Governors, the administration and your faculty.
It is the College’s duty and obligation to present successful students with their graduation diplomas. But, during this era when your dedication made the seemingly impossible possible, it is our privilege and honour to recognize your achievement.
Congratulations and stay well.
Patti France, M.Ad.Ed.
Graduation is an end and a beginning. It is a moment in time when you can pause to look back and to look ahead. St. Clair College Graduates, you have some stories to tell!
Looking back, you have completed the courses and assignments that were required to graduate. You are a success! Unlike many graduating classes, being a member of the class of 2020 or 2021 meant studying through a global pandemic. Our College community pulled together to quickly adapt to this unprecedented challenge. To graduate, you had to make difficult choices to succeed. You did not give up. These experiences are now a part of your life story.
Looking forward, you can take the tools gained through your educational and personal development during your time at St. Clair College with you into the workplace and the community. Each of your journeys will be different. Where will you live over the years to come? Where will you work? What will your life be like? You may already know some of the answers. However, I can assure you that life will give you opportunities, challenges and surprises you cannot imagine today. Remember, you have a strong foundation on which to build a successful future.
As important as your career will be, I would encourage you to take care of yourself and others. Stressful times take a toll on us all. Ensure that you are paying attention to your work-life balance. The most effective people are socially, emotionally and physically healthy. As we have all learned during this pandemic, many things we may have taken for granted in the past are not always there going forward. That is true of family and friends. Pay attention to your relationships and you will be stronger as your story develops. Be patient, kind and tolerant.
The St. Clair College community will always be here for you. You will always be part of our family just as we will always be a chapter in your life story.
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I wish you great success and satisfaction in the years to come.
Chair, Board of Governors
